About Bogota:
Bogota is situated at
the base of two mountains, Guadalupe and Monserrate. Several rivers,
one of which, the San Francisco, passes through the city. Bogota is
full of contrasts. Since it was founded in 1538 untill today it has
been growing steadily and shaping its identity. Its typically colonial
quality is still evident today. Towards the end of the 19th century,
the Spanish style was replaced by other European tendencies. France's
influence is evident in many of the palaces built during this period.
In the residential areas, the English tendencies are evident in the
houses built during the mid-twentieth century. Towards the end of the
century, as in most big cities in the world, skyscrapers and huge
shopping centres were built, following the North American tradition.
In order to witness this vast variety of architecture in the city, the
best thing is to visit the different areas which still retain their
original features, and immerse yourself in a city full of charm,
knowledge, entertainment and the wonderful aromas of its cuisine. The
city is planned on a grid, with numbered avenues, from south to north,
intersecting numbered streets going east-west. Among the city's
squares is the Plaza de Bolívar, where many important government
buildings and churches are located.
