About
Quetzaltenango:
Quetzaltenango is the
second largest city in Guatemala, with a population of 250,000. It is
situated near several volcanoes in the heart of the Sierra Madres, 200
kilometers west of Guatemala City. Quetzaltenango’s altitude of 2,333
meters above sea level ensures warm days, cool nights and no
mosquitoes. Quetzaltenango: "Xe laju' noj" which means "under 10
mountains". Xelajú has a rich history and with its six universities
and several technical schools, it is often referred to as Guatemala’s
cultural center and most progressive city. Within a few kilometers of
the city there are several Mayan towns which are Famous for their busy
markets and colorful traditional costumes and woven goods. With a
population 50% indigenous and 50% mestizos, the city is an example of
how traditionally impoverished indigenous people have obtained
economic and political power in Guatemala running small and big
businesses. In 1986, Xelajú elected its first indigenous mayor in 150
years. Websites about
