San Joaquin de Flores
is located a few miles from the university town of Heredia and is
about 12 miles from the capital, San Jose. It is perfect for those who
want to avoid the daily traffic, pollution and stress of the city, but
who still want the easy access to the shopping and nightlife.. Overall
this typical Costa Rican town offers the language traveller a good
opportunity to experience the local culture. Being in the province of
Heredia, it enjoys a pleasant climate all year which is also
ideal for coffee growing, which you find all around. There are
beautiful 19th century houses at the Calle Real, the main colonial
street. San Joaquín is a very religious community, and at the center
of their faith is the impressive centennial church built from 1865 to
1888. Due to the beauty of its arquitecture and decoration, the church
has been declared as an architectural and historical heritage of Costa
Rica. All the stones were brought in oxcarts all the way from Cartago.
Fourteen Italian sculptures of the 'Via Crucis', donated by the
families of the town at the time of construction, decorate the
beautiful gardens that surround the church.
